New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will confer Sant Kabir and National Handloom Awards during the celebration of 10th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2024 in New Delhi, a PIB press release stated. The awards are given to the weavers for their outstanding contributions to the handloom sector.

The Handloom Day celebrations in India began with the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on August 7, 1905. The first National Handloom Day was first held in 2015 to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement. The date was chosen specifically to coincide with the launch of the Swadeshi Movement. The day is dedicated to honoring the handloom weavers and their contributions to the country’s cultural, traditional, and economic landscape.

The celebrations also aim to raise awareness about the importance of the handloom sector in India’s socio-economic development.
