Visakhapatnam, Apr 2 (PTI) VPA on Thursday said it handled a record 91.17 million tonnes of cargo during the FY 2025-26, marking the highest-ever throughput in its 92-year history, and expressed confidence of crossing 100 million tonnes in 2026-27.

Visakhapatnam Port Authority Chairperson M Angamuthu said the performance surpassed the previous record of 82.62 million tonnes in 2024-25, setting a new benchmark.

“The port has handled 91.17 million tonnes of cargo during the financial year 2025-26, the highest ever in the 92-year journey of Vizag Port. We are confident that VPA will cross 100 million tonnes in FY27,” Angamuthu said in a press release.

The milestone reflects improved operational efficiency and coordinated efforts with stakeholders, he added.

Growth was driven by higher volumes of petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) and crude, iron ore, and fertilisers, along with better turnaround time, reduced berth delays, and faster vessel handling, the chairperson said.

The port also recorded its highest single-day cargo handling of over 5.5 lakh MT and managed 24 vessel movements in 24 hours, with high berth occupancy, he added.

According to Angamuthu, infrastructure upgrades—such as berth modernisation, storage expansion, and a strong railway network—supported efficient cargo evacuation, while advanced navigation systems ensured seamless round-the-clock operations.

The port’s ability to handle cape-size vessels, along with improved cargo handling practices and crude operations through Single Point Mooring (SPM), contributed to higher productivity.

VPA plans to collaborate with the Andhra Pradesh government on Mulapeta Port and develop Duggarajapatnam Port through a special purpose vehicle, it said.

He added that the port is moving towards handling non-dusty cargo, including the diversion of coal operations, and expanding through mechanisation.

The achievement underscores sustained growth and strengthens VPA’s position among the leading ports in the country. PTI MS SSK
