Visakhapatnam, Apr 21 (PTI) IGZP began showcasing a black panther for the first time in 40 years after receiving the rare big cat through an animal exchange programme with the Assam state zoo, an official said.
G Mangamma, curator of the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, also known as Visakhapatnam zoo, said the black panther was released into its enclosure on Tuesday.
“IGZP, Visakhapatnam, is happy to announce that, after a gap of 40 years, a female black panther has been officially released into its enclosure today,” she said in a press release.
Mangamma said the new addition enriches the zoo’s conservation, education, and biodiversity initiatives.
Besides the black panther, upgraded enclosures were inaugurated for a sloth bear, wolf, jackal, and a red-necked wallaby.
She further noted that animal adoption continues to play an integral role in zoo management and conservation support.
She added that the black panther has been adopted by M Nihira, a 21-month-old child, as part of the zoo’s animal adoption programme.
A donation of Rs 1.25 lakh was made via cheque to support the adoption of the black panther for a period of one year. PTI STH SSK
