The unemployment rate in urban areas decreased to 6.7 percent during the quarter January — March 2024, according to the data released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). This is a significant improvement from the 6.8 percent rate recorded during the same period in 2023, a PIB press release stated.
The report also revealed that the labor force participation rate, which measures the amount of people who are either working or actively seeking work, increased from 48.5 percent to 50.2 percent during the quarter January — March 2024. This growth is particularly evident among women, who have increased their participation rate from 22.7 percent to 25.6 percent during the period.
The worker population ratio, which represents the percentage of employed people in the population, rose from 45.2 percent to 46.9 percent during the quarter January — March 2024. Similarly, the female worker population ratio increased from 20.6 percent to 23.4 percent during the same period. The quarterly bulletin report provides key employment and unemployment indicators for urban areas.
