Bengaluru, Aug 17 (PTI) The Karnataka Legislative Council witnessed an uproarious scene on Monday as the BJP demanded an explanation over the killing of three people in Chamarajanagar district and sought the removal of Minister B Nagendra from the Cabinet.
The party alleged that Nagendra has not yet got a clean chit in the Karnataka State Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation scam worth Rs 89 crore.
The killing of three people in an alleged exchange of fire with Forest Department personnel on August 15 in Chamarajanagar led to uproar, followed by adjournment.
The opposition BJP termed the killing of three suspected poachers as a murder committed by the government.
Seeking an immediate discussion and a reply from the state Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Leader of the Opposition Chalavadi Narayanaswamy demanded justice for the families of the victims.
“Three precious lives were snatched. It is a murder committed by the government only. Those killed were minorities. Justice should be done to the families,” he said.
In reply, Minister Basavaraj Raya Reddy said the state government was ready to discuss this, but the opposition has to give a notice for it.
Chairman Saleem Ahmed’s appeal to the BJP to stay calm could not fetch any result.
The BJP was adamant for a detailed discussion and resorted to sloganeering inside the House. Finding the Council not in order, Ahmed adjourned the House.
Three alleged poachers were killed in an exchange of fire with forest personnel in the Datti forest area under the Shagya range here on Saturday, prompting Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The incident occurred in the dense forest area falling under the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary when forest personnel, acting on information about hunting, encountered four men, Minister Ramalinga Reddy had said.
Two of them died on the spot. One person was injured and was taken to hospital, where he reportedly died. One person allegedly fled the spot, the minister said.
After the House assembled, the BJP said it will not allow the functioning of the House until Nagendra was removed from the Cabinet.
Nagendra took oath as minister on August 3 and was given Planning and Statistics portfolio.
The BJP raised slogans alleging “loot” by the minister. In the midst of uproar, Chairman Ahmed conducted the proceedings of the house and later adjourned it for lunch. PTI GMS GMS KH
