UP: Retired assistant registrar dies after being hit by SUV in Jhansi

Lucknow/Jhansi (UP), Apr 25 (PTI) A retired assistant registrar died after the scooter he was riding was allegedly struck by a speeding SUV (Thar) in Jhansi in the residential campus of Bundelkhand University, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, a police constable, has been detained and suspended with immediate effect, and an investigation into the accident is underway, officials said.

Speaking about the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police of Jhansi BBGTS Murthy said that a speeding black Thar SUV hit Maniram Verma, aged approximately 70. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that the SUV was being driven by a constable named Rajat. The constable has been detained, and suspended with immediate effect, and orders have been issued for a departmental inquiry against him, he said.

A case regarding the accident has been registered at the Nawabad police station, and an investigation into the matter has commenced, the police said. PTI COR NAV MNK MNK
