New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Police have launched an investigation into one of their own sub-inspectors following allegations of assault by a lieutenant colonel of the Indian Army in Lucknow. According to a complaint by Lieutenant Colonel Anand Prakash Suman, the alleged assault took place around 9:40 am Sunday when he was driving his Hyundai car at the Telibagh intersection towards the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
Lt Col Suman, posted at the NCC Directorate Bihar & Jharkhand in Patna, alleged that the policeman was driving on the wrong side of the road, forcing him to apply brakes suddenly.
He said the sub-inspector started abusing him, and as soon as he opened the window of his car, the policeman slapped him and fled the spot after running the car over his leg.
The Lucknow Police Commissionerate registered a case against an unknown person under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving), 125 (a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rishabh Runwal said that an investigation is being carried out by a team led by a sub-inspector-level officer and that a police report would be filed in court soon.
“The investigation is going on as per the established procedure. The FIR has been filed as per the complaint under the necessary sections. Based on evidence and witness statements, further proceedings will be done, followed by the filing of a police report before the court,” Runwal told ThePrint.
The incident was captured by CCTV cameras at the intersection in an upscale Lucknow neighbourhood.
“A sub-inspector was driving this vehicle, which had come from the opposite direction. When I tried to stop and explain to him that he was on the wrong side, he started abusing me and as soon as I rolled down the car window, he slapped me and when I tried to stop his car, he crossed me between his and my car and ran over my left leg and ran away,” he alleged in the police complaint given Saturday.
Lt Col Suman urged the police to take strict action against the sub-inspector for assaulting an army officer. He also called for a review of the CCTV footage.
“You are requested to take strictest action against this police officer for raising his hand on the army officer and trying to crush him. You are again requested to take appropriate action on this incident so that such incidents do not happen again and army officers/JCOs/soldiers like us do not become targets of police mischief. And appropriate action should be taken after examining the CCTV footage,” Lt Col Suman said in his complaint.
