Agartala, Mar 26 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday informed the Assembly that teacher shortage in elementary education stands at 4,187.

Replying to a question by CPI(M) MLA Nayan Sarkar, the CM, who holds the Education portfolio, said the state needs 10,391 Under Graduate Teachers (UGTs) and 8,546 Graduate Teachers (GTs) in accordance to the revised state norms.

“Currently, a total of 8,985 UGTs and 5,765 GTs are working in schools that fall under the Elementary Education department. Therefore, we have a shortfall of 1,406 UGTs and 2,781 GTs — totaling 4,187 teachers — according to revised state norms,” he said.

In reply to another question by CPI(M) lawmaker Shyamal Chakraborty, Saha said, “The government has appointed 4,656 GTs and UGTs through the Teachers’ Recruitment Board of Tripura (TRBT) during the past five years”.

Asserting that steps have been initiated to provide quality education to students, the CM said, “NIPUN, a state mission on foundation literacy and numeracy, has been adopted.” “A total of 10,182 teachers engaged in primary education have been imparted training on foundation literacy and numeracy. We have appointed 200 block resource persons and cluster resource persons as master trainers for NIPUN,” he added. PTI PS MNB
