Kolkata, Apr 25 (PTI) Trinamool Congress candidate for Beleghata Assembly constituency Kunal Ghosh has nine criminal cases pending against him, including a money laundering case in connection with the Saradha ponzi scam, he stated in his affidavit submitted to the ECI along with his nomination.

A first-time assembly election candidate. Ghosh has Rs 21,000 cash in hand and movable assets worth Rs 1.72 crore as per the affidavit filed by him along with his nomination for the Beleghata constituency in east Kolkata.

The former Rajya Sabha MP of the Trinamool Congress was accused of conspiring with others to cheat victims in the Saradha ponzi scheme case and was in custody for nearly two years and ten months after his arrest in November, 2013.

Ghosh stated in the affidavit that he has not been convicted in any of these nine cases.

He has also been convicted in a case of attempted suicide under the now largely defunct section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), but no punishment was awarded to him by the designated MP/MLA court.

Ghosh was convicted of attempting to die by suicide by allegedly consuming sleeping pills while in judicial custody in 2014.

A journalist and writer by profession, Ghosh stated in his affidavit that he has no immovable assets in his name. PTI AMR RG
