Kolkata, Apr 10 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Friday claimed that those who had been associated with the Trinamool Congress during its early years were being “attacked, snubbed, and insulted” within the party.
Alleging that several leaders faced CPI(M) “atrocities” while expanding the TMC’s base in the early 2000s and were now being sidelined, Adhikari urged them to join the BJP.
He also inducted TMC leader from Mangalkot in Purba Bardhaman district, Bikash Narayan Chowdhury, into the BJP at a function here.
“Bikash da, a respected mass leader in the area, had led the protests against the CPI(M) in 2009 in Mangalkot. He won from the zilla parishad several times. Being insulted and humiliated under the present leadership of TMC, he finally decided to join the BJP,” Adhikari asserted.
“Our party will be stronger with such people. We will accord them the respect and importance they deserve,” he said at a press conference here.
Adhikari, who himself switched from the TMC to the BJP ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, also claimed that several other leaders would join the saffron party ahead of the 2026 polls.
Elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly will be held in two phases – on April 23 and April 29. Votes will be counted on May 4. PTI SUS RBT
