Kolkata, Sep 21 (PTI) Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Ram Das fell ill while being questioned by the CID in connection with a case of violence and was subsequently admitted to a hospital on Monday, a senior officer said.
Das, the legislator of Canning Paschim seat in South 24 Parganas district, was summoned by the agency for interrogation regarding violence during the 2023 panchayat election in the state.
“Das complained of chest pain and breathlessness at around 4 pm, nearly five hours after he appeared before the investigating agency in connection with allegations of violence during the panchayat elections,” the officer said.
The MLA was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was put on oxygen support.
“His condition was stated to be stable, though doctors decided to keep him under observation,” the officer said.
Das had appeared before the officials at the CID headquarters Bhabani Bhavan at around 11 am. He had earlier been summoned by the agency on two occasions.
Before appearing before the CID, the TMC leader had posted a message on social media saying, “Goodbye Canning, we will meet again, we will talk.” The post triggered speculation among his supporters about whether he was anticipating arrest.
Sources close to the MLA said he had been unwell for some time and had recently returned from Chennai after undergoing treatment. He also carried an inhaler when he went to the CID office on Monday, they said.
