On this day in 1950, India became a Republic as the Constitution adopted by the Constituent Assembly in November the previous year came into effect.
The Constitution was the product of 11 sessions of deliberations among members of the Constituent Assembly over a period of almost three years.
In line with the recommendation of the Cabinet Mission, members of the Constituent Assembly were chosen by indirect election by members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies. Among its members were those elected through the Provincial Legislative Assemblies, the Princely States and the Chief Commissioners’ Provinces.
The United Provinces were represented by 55 members in the Constituent Assembly, followed by Madras with 49, Bihar with 36, Bombay with 21, West Bengal with 19, C.P. and Berar with 17 and East Punjab with 12, among others.
