Hyderabad, Apr 25 (PTI) In a relief to the Congress government in Telangana, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has approved the nomination of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and retired professor M Kodandaram as MLCs under the Governor’s quota, official sources said on Saturday.

The Governor’s nod comes after a prolonged wait, as Azharuddin, who was sworn in as a minister on October 31 last year, is required to be elected to the legislature within six months, by April 30.

The issue figured in a meeting Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had with the Governor on April 19.

Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud hailed the Governor’s approval.

He said the presence of prominent persons in the legislative council would help in governance.

Azharuddin was nominated as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor’s quota by the Telangana government in August last year.

Meanwhile, Kodandaram, who played a key role in the Telangana agitation as chairman of Joint Action Committee of political parties, was nominated as MLC in 2024.

However, the matter ended up in courts with Sravan Dasoju and Kurra Satyanarayana, who were nominated during the BRS regime, filing petitions against their rejection by then Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. PTI SJR GDK SJR ROH
