Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 24 (PTI) The Southern Railways on Friday launched three in-house digital applications which are staff-friendly and would help to make train operations safer, smarter and paperless.
The three indigenously developed applications — e-TSR (Electronic Train Signal Register), RBMS (Railway Block Management System) and DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track) — were launched by General Manager R N Singh at a function held at the Southern Railways headquarters here, a Railways release said.
Conceived and developed in-house, the three apps together digitise some of the most safety-critical routines of day-to-day railway working like the recording of train signal events, the sanctioning and management of engineering blocks, and the protection of staff working on and near running lines, the release said.
“They mark a significant step in Southern Railway’s transition from paper based practices to a connected, real-time digital operating environment,” it said.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that technology in the railways must ultimately serve the men and women who run the system, and that these applications have been designed around the needs of the field staff, like the Station Master, the Controller, the Section Engineer and the trackman.
He said that the apps would help to reduce drudgery, eliminate avoidable error and, above all, safeguard lives.
The e-TSR will replace the conventional paper Train Signal Register maintained at stations with a secure electronic register.
“Train movement events are generated directly from data logger inputs and time stamps are captured automatically, substantially reducing manual error while saving time and paper,” the release said.
It said that by autocapturing the events and their timings, the job of Station Masters would be made simpler and it would allow them to handle the trains more efficiently and serve the public better.
The RBMS App provides a complete, paperless digital solution for end-to-end management of railway blocks, from the initial request to final closure.
“A real-time workflow covers request, sanctioning, availing, extension and cancellation of Line, Power and S and T blocks, with algorithm-based optimisation of block planning,” it said.
The DOST app addresses one of the most serious safety concerns on the Indian Railways – the protection of staff working on or near running lines, the release said.
The system correlates live train movement information drawn from the signalling network with the GPS location of field staff, and generates advance critical alerts to warn them of approaching trains, it said.
The alerts would be colour graded in real-time, as yellow and red, will be multilingual and will have audio, visual, flasher and vibration features to counter noisy track environments, the release said.
“Taken together, the three initiatives are expected to deliver enhanced safety for Railway staff and train operations, smarter operations through reduced manual intervention, real-time awareness enabling better and faster decision making, higher efficiency in block management, and a decisive step towards a safer, smarter and seamlessly connected digital railway,” it said.
