Mumbai, Aug 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday said the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ from the Red Fort would be a historic and proud moment for the country.
He was reacting to the Union Home Ministry’s announcement that for the first time at the Independence Day function, Vande Mataram will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
“‘Vande Mataram’ is not merely a song or slogan, but an inspiring sentiment deeply connected with the history of India’s freedom struggle and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters,” Shinde said, speaking to reporters after attending the ‘BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2026’ held in Mumbai.
During the freedom struggle, countless freedom fighters raised the cry of ‘Vande Mataram’ and laid down their lives for the country, he said, adding, “It is because of their sacrifices and martyrdom that we are able to breathe the air of freedom today. Therefore, the chanting of ‘Vande Mataram’ will generate a new sense of patriotic spirit, nationalism and national unity among all Indians,” Shinde said.
Everyone should welcome the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ which inspires the nation by remembering the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence, he said, adding that no one should oppose such initiatives that strengthen the spirit of patriotism and nationalism.
