Guwahati, Sep 27 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Friday that ‘one nation, one election’ is a step forward in the right direction, but, there are many complications in implementing it.

He said more consultations would be required with the states before the concept can be put into practice.

“We have already given our views. As a concept and as an idea, from governance and election point of view, ‘one nation, one election’ is the right way forward,” said Sangma, who was in Guwahati to attend a meeting of his National People’s Party (NPP).

“But there are many complications. It will require more consultations with the states and only then can we come to the practical side of how we can achieve ‘one nation, one election’,” he added.

Sangma said there will be multiple factors like some state governments still having their terms left.

“How all these adjustments take place is a crucial part. Otherwise, as an idea, objective, it is great,” he said.

The Union Cabinet had given its approval to the recommendations of a high-level committee on simultaneous polls on September 18.

The committee had recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the initial step, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days. PTI SSG SSG SOM
