Shimla, Apr 30 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Thursday urged young scientists to pursue research that helps improve the economic condition of farmers.

Virtually addressing the 17th convocation ceremony of the Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University (CSKHPAU) in Palampur from the Lok Bhavan here, Gupta emphasised the need to inculcate a scientific temperament among students, according to an official statement.

The governor said this would promote self-reliance among farmers and strengthen agricultural productivity.

President Droupadi Murmu, who is in Himachal Pradesh till May 1, was expected to attend the convocation and visit the Atal Tunnel Rohtang on the borders of Kullu and Lahaul and Spiti districts, but both events were cancelled due to bad weather.

Congratulating the graduating students and gold medallists, Gupta said the convocation marks a significant milestone in their academic journey, adding that the students must remain mindful of their responsibilities toward the society and the country.

The governor said nearly 90 per cent of Himachal Pradesh’s rural population depends on agriculture and allied activities, with around 62 per cent engaged in the sector, contributing about 9.4 per cent to the hill state’s economy.

He praised the university’s role in research and innovation, saying its alumni have made notable contributions in India and abroad, and expressed confidence that it would continue to advance education and rural development. PTI BPL SMV RC
