Thane, May 7 (PTI) Major Subhash Gawand (Retd), a veteran of the 1962 and 1971 wars, passed away in Maharashtra’s Thane due to age-related problems on Thursday, his family said. He was 88.

A resident of the city’s Gawand Bagh area, he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army in 1960 as a Second Lieutenant.

During his 22-year tenure in the Army, Gawand fought for the country in the 1962 Indo-China War and the 1971 India-Pakistan War, his daughter told the media.

“His post-retirement life was dedicated to instilling discipline and patriotism in the youth. He also founded the Jijñasa Sunday Military School to prepare boys and girls for the defence forces,” she said. PTI COR NR
