Kolkata, Apr 28 (PTI) Heads of various religious groups on Tuesday issued a joint appeal to citizens of West Bengal, urging them to ensure a peaceful voting and not to fall into any provocation.

The religious leaders under the banner of the ‘United Interfaith Foundation – India’ made this statement on the eve of the second and final phase of voting.

“We appeal to voters not to fall under provocation, avoid confrontation and uphold harmony. Voting is both a constitutional right and a solemn responsibility. Let this day stand as a reflection of Bengal’s highest values: calm, orderly and united in purpose,” it said.

The statement was signed by the Foundation’s President Archbishop Most Rev Elias Frank, General Secretary Dr Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, Nakhoda Masjid Imam Moulana Shafique Qasmi, and other representatives from Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Parsi communities.

They called on all stakeholders to contribute to an atmosphere where democracy can function without fear or disruption.

Highlighting the importance of social cohesion, the leaders said no political difference should override the “shared fabric of coexistence” and cautioned against reacting to rumours for maintaining communal harmony.

“Elections come and go, but the spirit of brotherhood must endure,” Archbishop Frank said, urging citizens to demonstrate compassion and unity during the final phase of polling on April 29 as they had done during the first leg on April 23.

Ahluwalia emphasised restraint and maturity, stating that Bengal’s strength lies in its diversity and collective responsibility to safeguard democratic values.

Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, describing peace as a “sacred responsibility” and calling for patience and mutual respect.

The statement also urged citizens to maintain calm in the post-poll period until the results are formally announced.

It advised against “speculation, provocation or premature celebrations that could inflame tension.” PTI SUS NN
