New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) The Railway Board has urged the Principal Chief Medical Directors of all railway zones to adopt a humanitarian approach in providing emergency treatment to newborns of medical beneficiaries if the infants don’t have a Unique Medical Identity Card.

UMID is a smart medical card issued to all railway employees and pensioners to access medical facilities for themselves and their dependents in railway hospitals.

The board’s letter, addressed to all concerned officials, has stated that in a recent interaction between employees and administration, the staff raised the problems of getting medical facilities for their infants in the absence of a Unique Medical Identity Card (UMID).

“To avoid difficulties faced by Railway medical beneficiaries in getting medical treatment for their newborn babies in the absence of UMID cards, it is informed that a facility for instant generation of UMID cards for newborn babies of Railway beneficiaries is available in HMIS (Health Management Information System),” the board’s letter said.

“However, in this regard, all concerned may be directed to adopt a humanitarian approach in providing essential medical facilities to newborns of Railway Medical Beneficiaries in case of emergency so that there is no delay due to lack of UMID card,” the letter advised the Principal Chief Medical Directors of railway zones.
