Chandigarh, Jul 20 (PTI) Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday paid tribute to the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War, saying the nation would always remain indebted to the Armed Forces for safeguarding India’s sovereignty.
Speaking at a week-long Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration organised by the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation at Tagore Theatre, Kataria described Kargil Vijay Diwas as a symbol of India’s courage, national pride and the supreme sacrifice of its soldiers.
He said India believes in peace but will always respond firmly to any threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Kataria also honoured Kargil War veterans, Veer Naris and the families of martyrs, saying their sacrifices continue to inspire the nation.
Highlighting Punjab’s military tradition, he paid tributes to freedom fighters Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh, and urged young people to draw inspiration from the courage, discipline and patriotism of the Armed Forces.
Kataria also appreciated the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation for organising the week-long commemorative events to promote patriotism among the youth.
Former Army Chief General V P Malik (Retd) attended the programme as the guest of honour.
Param Vir Chakra awardee Capt (Hony) Yogendra Singh Yadav (Retd.), Kargil War veterans, Veer Naris, families of martyrs, serving and retired defence personnel, ex-servicemen, NCC cadets, students and prominent citizens were also present.
The event also featured a documentary on the Kargil War, patriotic performances, a “Heroes Speak” session by veterans, a photo exhibition and a felicitation ceremony for Kargil heroes, gallantry awardees, Veer Naris and the families of martyrs.
Among those honoured were the family of Param Vir Chakra awardee Captain Vikram Batra (Posthumous), including his father G L Batra and brother Vishal Batra, along with several decorated veterans and serving military personnel. PTI VSD APL APL
