Chandigarh, Oct 2 (PTI) Shortly after the Congress on Friday appointed Pargat Singh the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, several senior leaders from the party’s state unit congratulated him on being entrusted with the responsibility, which comes a few months before the state goes to polls.
The Congress on Friday appointed Pargat Singh as the president of the Punjab PCC after Amarinder Singh Raja Warring submitted his resignation earlier in the day.
Pargat Singh is a former Indian Hockey captain who led the Indian team in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.
He made his political entry with the Shiromani Akali Dal, but later switched to the Congress. He became an MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment in 2017.
The appointment came days after the party leadership replaced its AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel with Sachin Pilot ahead of assembly polls due in the state early next year.
Earlier in the day, Warring met Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi and submitted his resignation.
Warring was among the first to congratulate Pargat Singh, the former Minister who is a sitting MLA from Jalandhar Cantt, after Congress made the appointment.
“Congratulations to Sardar @PargatSOfficial ji for being appointed as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee @INCPunjab. My best wishes,” Warring said in a post on X.
Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa also congratulated Pargat Singh. “Congratulations to @PargatSOfficial ji on being appointed President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Wishing him the best and success,” Bajwa said in a post on X.
In Jalandhar, Pargat Singh’s wife Barinder Preet Kaur told reporters that his party has entrusted him with a big responsibility.
She said Pargat comes from a sports background and whatever he has done in life has been with great determination, and it has always been his endeavour to take everyone along.
She said people of Punjab are waiting for ‘badlav’ and they will bring Congress to power in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and MP from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa extended his heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Pargat Singh on being entrusted with the responsibility of State Congress chief.
“I am confident that under your experienced leadership, Punjab Congress will further strengthen the spirit of unity and continue to raise the voice of the people and stand firmly for their rights. Best wishes for this new responsibility,” Randhawa said in a post on X.
Senior Congress leaders Rana Gurjit Singh and Raj Kumar Verka welcomed the party high command’s decision.
Raj Kumar Verka described Pargat Singh “as a fine human being”.
