Medininagar (Jharkhand), Apr 21 (PTI) Union Minister Sanjay Seth on Tuesday said the opposition parties have committed a ‘mahapaap’ (great sin) by defeating the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816.
The Union Minister of State for Defence told a press conference here that women in the country will never forget the date (April 17), the day on which the opposition parties committed the ‘mahapaap’ by defeating the bill in the Lok Sabha.
The Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 was defeated on April 17. While 298 members voted in support of the bill in Lok Sabha, 230 MPs voted against it. Out of 528 members who voted, the bill required 352 votes for a two-third majority.
Sisters and daughters will observe the date as “black day” and give reply in Indian democracy in the next few years, he said, accusing the opposition of shooting itself in the foot.
Expressing surprise over the opposition’s celebration soon after the bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha, Seth said it was nothing but a farce with women’s power.
