Itanagar, Jun 13 (PTI) A live mortar, supposedly of the 1962 India-China war, was successfully defused by the Indian Army in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, a senior police officer said on Saturday.
Tawang Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang said the unexploded mortar was recovered on Thursday afternoon in Lebrang area within the Tawang township, prompting an immediate security mobilisation.
“The information regarding the live mortar bomb was received from Tawang Police Station sub-inspector Lham Thinley. We immediately contacted the Indian Army, and the local police cordoned off the entire area to ensure public safety,” the SP said.
The mortar was defused on Friday in the presence of senior officials, including 190 Mountain Brigade Commander Brigadier Bhupal Singh, Colonel N Vasantharaj, Major Mohammad Akhlas, and the SP, another officer said.
The Army’s bomb disposal team safely transported the explosive item to the isolated Methang area, where the mortar was defused, a police statement said.
The SP praised the 190 Mountain Brigade for their swift response and technical expertise in effectively neutralising the threat.
Darang noted that unexploded mortar bombs of the 1962 era are recovered from various border areas in Arunachal Pradesh. He warned that such ammunition remains highly explosive and capable of causing damage.
He advised the people to immediately report the recovery of any suspected explosives to the police. PTI CORR BDC
