NPP names Dr D Rockyer Lyngdoh Nonglait as Shillong LS bypoll candidate

Shillong, May 7 (PTI) Meghalaya’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday announced that Dr D Rockyer Lyngdoh Nonglait, known for his work towards the promotion and preservation of the Khasi language and indigenous culture, will be its candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.

The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, a leader of the Voice of the People Party, on February 19. The date of the by-election is yet to be announced.

NPP president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said Nonglait embodied the aspirations of the people of Meghalaya and would strongly represent the state in Parliament.

Addressing the party’s General Executive Council meeting, Sangma said he extends best wishes to Nonglait for the by-election.

“A passionate advocate of the Khasi language and a strong voice for the preservation of our rich heritage and culture, Dr Nonglait embodies the aspirations of our people,” he added.

The chief minister also expressed confidence that Nonglait would effectively raise issues concerning Meghalaya at the national level.

The NPP candidate has been associated with initiatives aimed at strengthening Khasi literature, identity and cultural heritage.

No other party has announced nominees for the bypoll in the Shillong constituency, one of the two Lok Sabha seats in the North Eastern state.
