Mumbai, Sep 21 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Monday took suo motu (on its own) cognizance of severe noise pollution across Maharashtra amid the ongoing festival season.
The HC said it was not against any religion or festival but the issue of noise pollution.
A bench of Justices G S Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale expressed concern over noise pollution caused by the use of DJs, sound systems and loudspeakers during festivals and public events.
“We are not opposed to any religion or festival. However, while celebrating festivals, everyone should ensure others are not inconvenienced,” the court observed.
Posting the matter for hearing on Tuesday, HC directed the state’s advocate general Milind Sathe to apprise it of the rules governing noise pollution and if the same are being implemented during idol immersion processions.
The court sought information on how these rules are being followed, whether guidelines have been framed regarding permissible noise levels and if they are being effectively implemented.
It also sought to know about action being taken against those who violate the law. PTI SP BNM
