Rampur: People at a panchayat meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district witnessed drama after a woman refused to leave her paramour following which her husband gave up his plan to reconcile despite marital discord.
What left the husband and the other villagers stunned at the panchayat held Saturday night in Saidnagar village was the woman’s suggestion that she be allowed to spend “15 days each” with her lover and husband.
Her shocked husband, according to the onlookers, then gave up the plan to patch up in spite of her allegedly eloping with her paramour nine times previously in the last one year. “Forgive me. You stay with your lover,” the man said with folded hands.
While the marriage had taken place barely about one and a half years ago, the woman is said to have come in contact with the lover soon afterwards. The husband had taken the help of the panchayat on previous occasions as well whenever she went to her lover, according to the villagers.
About eight days ago, when the woman was nowhere to be seen, the husband approached the Azimnagar police station and instead of registering a complaint, requested that his wife be brought back to him.
Subsequently, the police traced the woman and handed her over to the husband. But the very next day, she allegedly ran away to her lover.
The helpless man then sought help from the panchayat again, wherein the village elders and others tried to convince the woman to reconcile with her husband. It was then that the woman suggested the “compromise,” a suggestion that was promptly rejected by the husband.
“We saw how the husband, in front of everyone, with folded hands, told his wife to stay with her lover. That was a shameful moment for the panchayat as well.” recalled villager Shiv Charan Lal, who was present at Saturday panchayat.
The distraught husband, meanwhile, told the panchayat that he had forgiven his estranged wife several times, only to be left broken. “I tried my best to convince her and save our marriage. But when she clearly said that she aould divide her time between me and her lover, I am forced to tell her to stay with him. I have no other option,” he said.
Though the Azimnagar police station has not intervened so far, the police said that legal action would be taken if either of the parties comes forward with a complaint.
