New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the deaths of five from consumption of spurious liquor in Gujran village, Punjab, in the intervening night of 19 to 20 March 2024.
The commission has called for a detailed report from the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Punjab, including the status of the FIR registered by the police, medical treatment of the victims, and compensation if any, granted to the aggrieved families.
It has further requested the Director General of Police to submit a report within four weeks. The report should also mention the action taken against the officers responsible for the incident.
Citing a media report, NHRC said the victims had consumed spurious alcohol on 18 March. They were rushed to the hospital when their condition deteriorated.
