New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that there was an organ transplants racket in Haryana and Rajasthan.
According to the report, the Health Department reportedly conducted a raid at a hotel in Sector-39 of Gurugram and found a Bangladeshi national resting there after he had his kidney removed at a hospital in Jaipur as part of a financial deal. The team of the Health Department also caught four other people who had reportedly had a kidney transplant procedure.
The commission has asked the Chief Secretaries of the Governments of Haryana and Rajasthan to prepare a report within four weeks. This report should include the status of the FIR registered with the police and whether any arrest has been made. The commission has also requested that a detailed plan be prepared to curb the illegal trade in human organs. The NHRC has also requested that the Director General of Police of both the states prepare a report on the steps taken to prevent the illegal trade in human organs. The commission has asked the government to ensure that the miscreants are identified and booked under law without any delay.
There is a specific law in India to deal with the subject of illegal trade in human organs. This law is called the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. It was amended in 2011 and came into force in 2014. The states of Haryana and Rajasthan have both adopted this law.
