New Delhi: The National human rights commission (NHRC) said in a press statement issued Friday that it is launching an investigation into the death of a lineman who was electrocuted while working on an electricity transformer in Gurugram, Haryana, on 21 January.

The lineman, employed by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), died at the scene in Sikanderpur Badha, according to a media report.

The commission observes that the news report, if true, indicates a serious violation of the victim’s human rights since it suggests that the electricity supply was restored even as he was working.

The NHRC issued notices to both the chairman of DHBVN and the commissioner of police, Gurugram.  They have been given two weeks to submit a detailed report, which must include the status of the First Information Report (FIR) and details of any compensation provided to the deceased’s family.

The family of the lineman has reportedly accused the electricity department of “gross negligence,” as per the media report dated 22 January, 2025.
