Kohima, Jul 3 (PTI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday said his government has adopted a long-term strategy to develop world-class sports infrastructure and training facilities, with the aim of producing athletes capable of excelling at the national and international level.

Rio, who virtually inaugurated 16 sports infrastructure projects here earlier in the day, said the state government has a vision to build sports facilities comparable with the best in the country.

Highlighting the changing role of sports, the CM said the sector has evolved beyond recreation into a vibrant industry capable of generating employment and new economic opportunities.

He said that strengthening the sporting culture, improving the capacity of coaches and trainers, and providing greater exposure to athletes would help nurture talent and build a stronger future for Nagaland, according to an official statement.

The 16 projects comprise four facilities funded under the Khelo India initiative and 12 state-sponsored projects.

The programme was virtually attended by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton and other senior officials.

In a post on X, Mandaviya said the Centre remains committed to empowering the youth of the northeast, with the goal of making the region a hub of sporting excellence. PTI NBS RBT
