New Delhi: Ahead of the 77th Independence Day celebrations, the top brass of Delhi Police met Wednesday to discuss security measures with special emphasis on monitoring terror outfits, and criminals who might have infiltrated from Bangladesh after its recent regime change.

The meeting, chaired by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, also focused on intelligence gathering on terror outfits, specific security measures like identifying and tracing recently-released criminals, and monitoring closely those with a radical background.

A core group of officials formed to tackle interstate gangs were also present at the meeting, ThePrint has learnt.

Others in attendance included officers from the National Investigation Agency, National Intelligence Grid, Narcotics Control Bureau as well as cops from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.

“The meeting was interactive, lasted for nearly two hours and was attended by nearly 50 officials. There was discussion on issues such as intelligence gathering and prompt sharing with counterpart agencies,” a top official told ThePrint.

The meeting was to plan coordination between law enforcement agencies and police forces before the 77th Independence Day on 15 August, he added.

In his briefing to officers, Arora stressed on the need to launch an initiative to trace criminals who were released recently, particularly those with radical and terrorist backgrounds.

Underscoring the need to stop smuggling of arms, Arora emphasised on the need to brief ground-level officials who can cross check records of all arms dealers to avoid loopholes that can be exploited by gangsters.

To stop the misuse of stolen cars in Delhi-NCR and other states, Arora asked for a list of vehicles modified in the last 10 days and the sharing of information on motor vehicle theft.

Arora also asked for the verification of couriered articles delivered at unspecified addresses in the last two months to trace supply of any suspicious substances.

“The officers shared intelligence related to terror inputs and the anti-terror measures taken. These include border checking, verification of suspicious elements, etc. Issues related to movement of paragliders, drones and other flying objects from open areas were discussed. Advance information about the movement of any suspicious elements or vehicles was stressed upon,” the Delhi Police said Wednesday.

The police further said they were zeroing in on interstate gangs operating in the national capital region (NCR) and incidents related to supply of illegal firearms and narcotics.

“Traffic restrictions during Independence Day celebrations and steps to check unauthorised intrusion at borders have been planned and officers of other states were requested to cooperate for ensuring the effective implementation of the same,” the police added.
