New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has formally declared the Red Fort blast “a terrorism incident”.
The declaration was adopted alongside several other resolutions at a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Wednesday, following his return from Bhutan.
“The country has witnessed a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces, through a car explosion near the Red Fort on the evening of 10 November 2025. The explosion resulted in multiple fatalities, and caused injuries to several others,” a government spokesperson said in a statement.
At around 7 pm Monday, a white Hyundai i20 exploded near Gate 1 of the Lal Qila metro station, directly adjacent to the iconic Red Fort. Thirteen people lost their lives, and 31 others were injured, and a number of vehicles caught fire at the crowded blast spot. The primary suspect, identified as Dr Umar U Nabi from Pulwama, is believed to have been driving the car when it blew up.
Delhi Police lodged an FIR under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, against unidentified persons. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
After landing in New Delhi from Bhutan, Modi went to Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash (LNJP) Hospital to meet the injured and their families.
At the meeting, the Union Cabinet also expressed appreciation for “the timely and coordinated response of the authorities, security agencies, and citizens who acted with courage and compassion in the face of adversity”.
“The Cabinet directs that the investigation into the incident be pursued with the utmost urgency and professionalism so that the perpetrators, their collaborators, and their sponsors are identified and brought to justice without delay. The situation continues to be closely monitored at the highest levels of the government,” read the statement.
