Amritsar, Mar 20 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia on Friday asked party MLAs to take full responsibility and ensure daily accountability to make Punjab drug-free.
Addressing party leaders, MLAs and workers in Amritsar under the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign, he said the fight against drugs was a long-term mission and not a one-day effort.
The former deputy chief minister of Delhi said MLAs must remain alert and ensure that drugs are not sold in their areas, adding that failure to act against drug peddling amounts to neglect of duty.
“If you cannot stand up against drug mafias, you should not be part of the party,” he said, asserting that AAP was formed out of struggle and would not back down from any fight.
Referring to the party’s origins, he said it emerged from an anti-corruption movement and was not created for enjoying power.
He also highlighted governance work in Delhi, saying that despite curbs imposed by the Centre, the government led by Arvind Kejriwal delivered reforms in education, healthcare, electricity and water sectors, which earned public support in the 2020 Assembly elections.
Alleging political targeting of AAP leaders, Sisodia claimed that cases against him and other leaders did not stand in court.
He said meetings would be held across all blocks from March 24 to 31, where village-level teams would report on drug prevalence and identify those responsible.
Sisodia stressed that MLAs and local leaders must coordinate closely and ensure strict action against those involved in drug trade.
He also reiterated a zero-tolerance policy, saying even party workers found linked to drug trade should face strict action.
Calling the campaign a collective effort, he said the government, police and people were working together to eliminate drugs from Punjab.
He added that progress would be reviewed after March 31, with each constituency required to present data on drug-free villages and timelines to eliminate the menace.
Sisodia expressed confidence that the campaign would succeed through collective effort and determination. PTI VSD NB NB
