Aizawl, Jul 22 (PTI) Hundreds of students from various institutions and schools in Mizoram staged a demonstration here on Wednesday to express solidarity with those who have been protesting in New Delhi over NEET paper leaks.
During the protest in front of Vanapa Hall in the state capital, the agitators raised slogans – ‘Modi ko hatao, Desh Bachao’, ‘We want freedom from poverty, we want freedom from unemployment’, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over paper leaks in the medical entrance test.
On Monday, thousands of people converged near Parliament in the national capital on the first day of the Monsoon session to push for the resignation of Pradhan over the NEET paper leaks. They clashed with the police personnel.
The protestors in Aizawl also demanded stringent punishment for wrongdoers and sought justice and compensation for students who had been victimised by the paper leaks.
While extending solidarity to activist Sonam Wangchuk in his fight for student rights, the protestors blamed the BJP-led NDA government for allegedly infringing on their rights and jeopardising their career.
Apart from indigenous Mizo students, several non-Mizo students also took part in the protest.
Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) extended support to the students, saying the demonstration was a “courageous effort to safeguard students’ rights and demand accountability”.
The party said the students were justified in opposing any attempt to undermine their rightful opportunities through abuse of power.
It also commended the protestors for raising their voices on behalf of those allegedly affected by irregularities.
The MNF, which is an ally of the NDA at the Centre, said that the large turnout reflected the youth’s opposition to corruption and misuse of authority, adding that their demand for punishment of wrongdoers and justice for victims was legitimate.
