Shillong/Guwahati, Apr 25 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman, who went missing from Guwahati, was rescued from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong on Saturday, police said.

Ruling out kidnapping, they said the woman had travelled to Shillong on her own and was facing personal and mental distress.

The woman is a former teacher at a private school in Guwahati. She had been reported missing by her family on Friday afternoon after she left home to collect her last month’s salary from her former employer.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said she was found near the SBI branch close to Polo Ground around 8 am by traffic police personnel and later taken to Sadar police station.

“She was in a disoriented condition and unable to explain how she reached Shillong,” he said.

She was later sent for medical examination, and Guwahati Police were informed, he added.

A Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police, formed to investigate the case, brought her back to Guwahati in the evening.

A Guwahati Police officer said there was no kidnapping and the woman had willingly gone to Shillong for personal reasons.

“She is mentally depressed. There was no prior planning involved,” he said.

Police said the woman had left her Guwahati home around 10.30 am on Friday, took a bike taxi to AEC Point in Jalukbari, withdrew Rs 7,000 from an ATM, travelled by bus to Paltan Bazar and then hired a cab to Shillong, around 100 km away.

She stayed alone in a hotel room in Shillong for the night, they said.

The reasons given by the woman for her actions are also being verified as part of the investigation, they added. PTI JOP/SSG SSG SOM
