New Delhi, April 2 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday inducted a new fleet of advanced machines, including 16 backhoe loaders and two flood control vehicles, to improve sanitation and tackle perennial waterlogging issues.

The newly flagged-off fleet also included six mechanical road sweeping machines, and the move is aimed at strengthening the city’s preparedness ahead of the monsoon while also improving routine sanitation operations.

According to an official statement, two CNG-powered flood control emergency vehicles were deployed, each capable of pumping out up to 10,000 litres of water per minute. These high-capacity machines are expected to improve response time during waterlogging incidents, a recurring problem in several parts of the capital during heavy rains.

Speaking at the event, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said the initiative shows a shift towards visible, on-ground development.

“We are committed to making Delhi clean, healthy, and green. This modern fleet will ensure that citizens do not face the kind of waterlogging problems seen in the past,” he said.

In addition to flood management, the induction of six mechanical road sweepers is expected to boost dust control efforts and reduce reliance on manual sweeping, particularly on high-traffic roads. The machines, with a capacity of 4.5 cubic metres, will also improve safety for sanitation workers, the statement said.

Further strengthening waste management operations, MCD has added 16 new backhoe loaders, taking the total fleet to 68. These machines will be used for lifting and handling mixed waste more efficiently, reducing manual effort and speeding up sanitation work, it said.

Officials said all vehicles will be operated under an Operation and Maintenance model to ensure optimal performance and longevity, with quality certification from IIT Delhi. PTI MSJ APL
