Massive fire at Goa nightclub leaves 25 dead including tourists, 6 injured

The fire was reported around midnight. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased.

Goa: A massive fire broke out at a popular nightclub in Goa’s Arpora late Saturday. According to the Goa Police, 25 people lost their lives, of which four were tourists, and 14 were staff members. Another six have been injured.

“A massive fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa, resulting in 25 deaths, out of whom 4 confirmed to be tourists, 14 were staff members and the identity of 7 is yet to be established. Six persons are injured and their treatment is going on. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police and fire department investigation is in progress. Legal action is being taken,” an ANI report quoted the police as saying.

The Goa nightclub fire was reported around midnight, following which emergency teams rushed to the scene. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

A probe is underway. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered an inquiry.

“I am closely reviewing the situation arising from the tragic fire incident at Arpora, in which 25 people have lost their lives and 6 have been injured. All six injured persons are in a stable condition and are receiving the best medical care. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry into the entire incident to identify the cause and fix responsibility,” he wrote in a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased. The injured will be given Rs 50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) wrote, “An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Arpora, Goa. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM.”

The PM also extended his condolences. “The fire mishap in Arpora, Goa is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Goa CM Dr. Pramod Sawant Ji about the situation. The State Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected,” read a post on X.
