Aizawl, Apr 2 (PTI) A Manipur Police personnel and his associate were arrested in Mizoram’s Kolasib town near the Assam border for allegedly possessing over 1 kg of heroin, an official said on Thursday.

Excise and narcotics department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said the arrest was made during an operation at Khuangpuilam area on Wednesday.

During the operation, officials intercepted a consignment of heroin weighing 1.215 kg, he said.

The 44-year-old policeman and his 24-year-old associate were arrested on the spot while allegedly transporting the contraband to Silchar in neighbouring Assam, the official said.

The two accused hailed from Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts in Manipur, he said.

An SUV bearing a Manipur registration number plate, which was allegedly used to transport the contraband, was also seized by the officials.

The two were booked under section 21 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and were produced at the Kolasib district and session court, Zohmingthanga said. PTI CORR MNB
