Bhopal: The Mohan Yadav-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is keen on allowing malls, restaurants, IT sector among others to operate 24/7 for boosting economic activity in Madhya Pradesh.

The labour department, under minister Prahlad Patel, has given an in-principle approval for removing areas governed by the municipal corporations and notified industrial areas to be removed from the ambit of the Madhya Pradesh Shops and Establishments Act, 1958.

“This will empower the establishment owners to operate their establishments as per their decision and will not be forced to close. However, an important aspect to keep in mind is to ensure the welfare of the employees and the business should not be done at the cost of the employees welfare,” Deputy Secretary, Labour, Virendra Singh told The Print.

No employee will be allowed to work for a shift of more than 8 hours and for not more than 48 hours in a week, he said.

Singh added that the proposal once drafted would be moved to the legal department and after its vetting, it will be enforced after its notification is published in the state gazette.

“The decision will be enforced across all the municipal corporations and designated industrial zones in the state. Later, a review will be undertaken to consider if the order can be replicated across the entire state,” the senior bureaucrat said.
