New Delhi: Delhi Lt Governor V.K. Saxena Monday approved 20 percent reservation for former Agniveers in Delhi Police’s male constable recruitment with exemption from the physical efficiency test and three years of relaxation in the prescribed upper age limit.
Police constables are appointed within the age of 18 and 25 years.
Launched in 2022, the Agniveer scheme was brought in for the recruitment to the armed forces. On 10 February, the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha said that a dedicated ex-Agniveer wing and an ex-Agniveer cell under Ministry of Home Affairs have been created for smooth coordination, monitoring and formulation of rehabilitation policies for them.
Saxena’s approval comes after Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the state government is preparing to give 10 percent horizontal reservation to Agniveers in government jobs after they complete four years of military service. Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini has also announced that Agniveers will be provided 20 percent reservation in police recruitment in the state. Back in July 2024, six BJP-ruled states (Gujarat, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand) had announced that Agniveers would receive reservation in government jobs, police and other departments.
In the case of the national capital territory of Delhi, a source from Lok Niwas told ThePrint that the quota has been created through an amendment in Rule 9 of Delhi Police (Appointment & Recruitment) Rules, 1980, to incorporate provisions for recruitment of Ex-Agniveer as male constable, or executives in Delhi Police.
They will also get exemption from the physical efficiency test and three years relaxation in prescribed upper age limit, the source said.
Further, age relaxation of five years beyond the prescribed upper age limit, that is 25 years, will be given to the candidates from the first batch of Agniveer scheme, the source added.
At present, there are 42,451 sanctioned posts of male constable (executive) in Delhi Police who are appointed through direct recruitment process.
