Kota (Rajasthan) Aug 11 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman died after undergoing cesarean delivery at Kota’s JK Lone Hospital on Tuesday, the second maternal death in 24 hours, with the doctors attributing her death to seizures and respiratory complications.
The woman was identified as Karina, wife of Amir Khan, a resident of Ladpura village in Kaithun area of Kota district.
She went into labour in the afternoon, following which she had a C-section and delivered twins, a boy and a girl, the doctors at JK Lone Hospital said.
However, shortly afterwards her condition suddenly deteriorated, and she died.
Her demise came a day after the death of 34-year-old Gangotri, who died under similar circumstances in the hospital on Monday morning.
“Her blood pressure was normal in the earlier months of pregnancy, but upon arrival at our facility, her blood pressure was significantly elevated,” Dr Nirmala Sharma, JK Lone Hospital Superintendent, said.
“Medical records indicated that Karina had been prescribed blood pressure medication since her seventh month of pregnancy, a detail the patient was unaware of,” she claimed.
Sharma said that doctors performed an emergency C-section because delivering the babies was the primary medical intervention needed to stabilise Karina’s surging blood pressure.
But soon after, the her body suddenly turned cold, prompting the doctors to administer necessary medications, she said.
Sharma claimed that Karina succumbed to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by aspiration during the seizure episode, along with Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) and postpartum eclampsia.
“Because of DIC, she experienced multi-site bleeding, which manifested as blood in her urine,” Sharma said, adding, “Despite all efforts, we could not save her.” Sharma said the postpartum eclampsia triggered fits, causing a severe drop in blood oxygen saturation levels from 86% down to 62%, and a sharp fall in blood pressure to 90/60 mmHg.
Karina’s husband, however, alleged foul play, claiming, “Her condition started deteriorating after she was administered some fluid.” “She was in good health till last night, asking for water during the night. Her condition worsened suddenly after she was administered fluid through a small bottle,” Khan said.
Karina underwent a regular monthly medical check-up with a government doctor, who never mentioned any complication throughout nine months, he claimed. PTI COR KSI KSI
