Nashik, Apr 21 (PTI) A case of cheating has been registered against self-proclaimed godman Ashok Kharat at Sinnar police station in the district, an official said on Tuesday.
Kharat (55), who headed a temple trust and was visited by several Maharashtra politicians over the years, was arrested last month after a woman accused him of raping her repeatedly over three years. Since then, police in Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts have registered at least a dozen cases against him including those related to sexual exploitation and cheating.
As per the latest First Information Report, Kharat and his associates allegedly opened 32 accounts in the name of complainant Narayan Ramchandra Ghotekar and others at Shri Jagdamba Mata Gramin Bigarsheti (Rural Non-Agricultural) Cooperative Credit Society, Kundewadi.
The mandatory procedure including scrutiny of documents such as Aadhaar card and PAN card was not carried out while opening the accounts, stated the complaint.
During August 10, 2016, to October 31, 2023, Kharat and credit society employees allegedly carried out transactions of Rs 57,90,979 in Ghotekar’s accounts without his knowledge, as per the FIR.
Kharat, who is already in police custody in other cases, was booked under sections 316 (5) (criminal breach of trust) and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and further probe was on, police said. PTI COR KRK
