Bengaluru: Multiple videos went viral Monday purportedly showing a DGP-rank police officer from Karnataka behaving inappropriately with multiple women in his office and while in uniform.

The individual in the viral videos is purportedly K. Ramachandra Rao, a 1993-batch IPS officer and the interactions appear to take place in a government office. ThePrint could not immediately establish the authenticity of the videos.

In March 2025, IPS officer’s step daughter, 33-year-old Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested for smuggling over 14 kgs of gold at Bengaluru international airport. At the time it had emerged that she had misused state protocol to evade checking by authorities.

Rao currently serves as DGP at the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement or DCRE. He was appointed to his current post in August last year after being sent on compulsory leave for six months following his step daughter’s arrest. Rao was serving as chairman & managing director of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation at the time of the incident.

The IPS officer had at the time said he had no contact with his step daughter and distanced himself from any wrongdoing.

Ranya was caught on 3 March at Bengaluru international airport when she disembarked from an Emirates flight from Dubai with 14.2 kgs of gold, valued at Rs 12.56 crore, “ingeniously concealed on person”, according to anti-smuggling agency Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

On the viral videos of K. Ramachandra Rao emerging now, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said he had no knowledge of the incident nor did he comment on the content of the videos.

“I don’t know anything about it. You can ask the home minister and chief minister about it,” Shivakumar said.

Rao did not respond to phone calls and WhatsApp texts from ThePrint, seeking comments. When and if he responds, this report will be updated.

Karnataka DG-IGP, M. A. Saleem also did not respond to ThePrint’s calls seeking comment.

The videos appear to be shot inside an office across an officer’s desk. The faces of the women in the video are blurred.
