New Delhi: An Indian student from Hyderabad was reportedly shot dead Friday at a gas station in Dallas, Texas, where he worked part-time.

Chandra Shekhar Pole, had completed his Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery and then moved to the US for higher studies. Former minister and BRS MLA from Siddipet T Harish Rao met the student’s parents, and urged the Telangana government to help the family bring his mortal remains to his hometown.

A video of the meeting showed Pole’s mother crying uncontrollably, while another individual is heard saying it was an unprovoked attack. “The pain that the parents are going through, knowing that their son, who they believed would reach great heights, is no more, is heart-wrenching to witness. My deepest condolences to their family members,” Rao wrote on X.

This incident comes weeks after the murder of another Indian-origin man in Dallas. Chandra Nagamallaiah was beheaded in front of his wife and child by his employee last month. The killer then went on to kick around the man’s severed head in a parking lot before reportedly dumping it in a garbage bin.

An affidavit citing video footage of the incident stated that Nagamallaiah, a motel manager, had directed Yordanis Cobos-Martinez not to use a defective washing machine while he and another co-worker were cleaning a room. The accused reportedly got upset when Nagamallaiah spoke to the co-worker and asked her to translate his request.

A total of 172 Indians were attacked or murdered abroad between 2021 and 2023, with most cases in Saudi Arabia, followed by the US, the Ministry of External Affairs had informed Parliament in December last year.

There were attacks on Indians in 37 countries in this time period, with 25 incidents reported in Saudi Arabia, followed by 22 in the US. In 2021, there were no attacks reported in the US, but this rose to 10 in 2022 and 12 in 2023.
