Shimla, Aug 11 (PTI) A six-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into the swollen Ravi River by his father in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, following which the accused surrendered himself to the police, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the Kiyani Gram Panchayat area of Chamba on Monday night, when Hitesh Kumar, a resident of the area, allegedly threw his son into the river, police said.
The accused surrendered before the police on Tuesday morning and has been taken into custody for questioning.
Following the incident, police, along with local residents, launched a massive search operation to locate the child in the Ravi River.
However, the strong current and high water level in the river have posed a major challenge to the rescue teams. The search was still underway at the time of filing of this report.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Chamba) Dinesh Sharma said continuous searches were being conducted in likely areas of the river, but no trace of the child had been found so far due to the strong current.
Police are questioning the accused father to ascertain what led him to allegedly throw his own son into the river.
