Shimla, Oct 2 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Governor Kavinder Gupta on Friday paid floral tributes to ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries.

Interacting with the media after paying floral tributes to Gandhi at the historic Ridge in Shimla, the Governor said Gandhi, through his struggle and the power of Satyagraha, played a historic role in India’s freedom movement and dedicated his entire life to the service of society.

He said Gandhi united people from different sections of society in the freedom struggle and his contribution would always be remembered by the nation.

“Mahatma Gandhi is an ideal, a source of inspiration and a guide for us. His teachings continue to remain relevant even today,” he said in a statement issued here.

The governor also paid homage to all the freedom fighters and martyrs whose sacrifices contributed to India’s independence. He said the nation must continue to remember and draw inspiration from their courage, sacrifice and dedication.

He visited an exhibition on the life and journey of Gandhi organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations at the Ridge. He also distributed heaters provided by Maitri Sanstha among sanitation workers.

Later, the governor visited the Central Telegraph Office (CTO) to pay homage to former prime minister Shastri on his birth anniversary and recalled his contribution to the nation’s progress.

The governor said Shastri set high standards of integrity, simplicity and probity in public life. “Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji established high standards of cleanliness and probity in politics. In the present times, political leaders need to draw inspiration from his life and values,” he said.

He emphasised that the lives and ideals of Gandhi and Shastri continue to offer important lessons in public service, responsibility and commitment to the nation.

Remembering the invaluable contributions of Gandhi and Shastri to nation-building, the chief minister said their ideals and principles continue to remain relevant even today.

He said the present generation must follow the path of truth, non-violence, simplicity, dedication to duty and service to the nation shown by the two leaders.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
