Shillong, Jun 21 (PTI) Heavy showers lashed parts of Meghalaya, with Mawsynram town in the state’s East Khasi Hills district receiving 530 mm of rain in 24 hours, according to the weather department.

Meteorologists said the amount of rainfall that Mawsynram received in one night is equivalent to what Jodhpur or Bikaner receive in a period of over six months.

The weather department recorded 470 mm of rain in RKM Sohra and 390 mm in Mawkyrwat.

The incessant rain damaged a stretch of the national highway connecting Shillong with Dawki near the Bangladesh border.

Rainwater washed away a portion of the road below the Laitlyngkot town, around 35 km south of Shillong, according to district administration officials.

No injuries were reported in the incident, but the damage has snapped road connectivity to Dawki and is likely to disrupt traffic movement on the route, they said.

Officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and contractors are working to restore connectivity.

Heavy rainfall was also recorded at Shella (100 mm), Williamnagar (90 mm), Mawryngkneng (90 mm), Jowai (80 mm), Barapani (70 mm) and Ratacherra (70 mm), the weather department data showed. PTI JOP NSD
