Chennai: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, who had left Karur for Chennai Saturday night without commenting on the stampede and the deaths at his campaign rally, reacted to the tragedy Sunday morning with a detailed heartfelt condolence note on X, and announced a solatium of Rs 20 lakh to the kin of the deceased.

On Saturday evening, thousands of his supporters had turned up to attend the rally even before he had arrived at the venue. While he was speaking, chaos ensued. At least 40 people have died and over 50 have sustained injuries.

Vijay had left Karur and gone to Trichy to leave for Chennai via flight, refusing to speak to media persons at Trichy airport. Later, at 11.15 pm Saturday, he posted a short condolence message: “I am writing in an unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.

More than 12 hours later, Vijay released a detailed statement, saying that his “heart and mind are weighed down” by the incident, and announcing financial assistance to the victims’ families. He said that he could not “find words to express the pain” of losing supporters who had gathered for him.

Recalling the faces of those he met in Karur, he wrote that their affection now makes his heart “slip further from its place”. Referring to the victims as his own relatives, Vijay announced that each bereaved family would receive Rs 20 lakh as relief, while those undergoing treatment for injuries would get Rs 2 lakh each.

“It is an irreparable loss. No matter what consolation is offered, the void left by our loved ones cannot be endured,” he further wrote. “This is not a large sum in the face of the loss. Still, at this time, it is my duty as someone belonging to your family to stand by you with heartfelt support.”

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and promised that his newly launched political outfit TVK would extend all support to families of the victims. “With the grace of God, we will try to recover from this,” Vijay added.
