Chandigarh, Jul 30 (PTI) Haryana has launched an ambitious Yamuna rejuvenation plan, proposing 18 new sewage treatment plants with a capacity of 621 MLD, 12 industrial effluent treatment projects and restoration of all identified ponds along the river corridor.
Reviewing the roadmap on Thursday, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi directed departments to fast-track projects aimed at strengthening wastewater treatment, industrial pollution control and solid waste management.
The plan also includes technology upgrades for six existing STPs, Integrated Solid Waste Management clusters across all 33 urban local bodies in the Yamuna catchment, six biogas plants for dairy waste processing, and restoration of 61 identified ponds and water bodies, 11 of which have already been rejuvenated.
During the review, Rastogi assessed progress under the Yamuna Action Plan, which focuses on expanding treatment infrastructure, plugging gaps in sewage and industrial effluent management, improving solid waste processing, and protecting water bodies in the Yamuna basin.
He stressed the need for close coordination among departments to ensure projects are completed on schedule and implemented effectively, according to an official statement.
Chairman of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Vinay Pratap Singh, informed the meeting that technology upgrades are underway at six existing STPs with a combined treatment capacity of 284 MLD.
He said 18 new STPs with a total capacity of 621 MLD, estimated to cost Rs 932.18 crore, have been proposed or are under construction to significantly enhance sewage treatment in the Yamuna catchment.
To strengthen industrial pollution control, the state has also proposed 12 Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) projects with a combined capacity of 187.25 MLD. The facilities are expected to bridge the remaining gap in industrial effluent treatment and cater to 6,417 industries in the Yamuna catchment area.
The review covered the progress of proposed and under-construction STPs in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Panipat and Bahadurgarh, besides the status of CETP projects at various locations.
Departments were directed to expedite tendering, approvals and construction so that the additional treatment capacity becomes operational within the prescribed timelines.
As part of the integrated waste management strategy, Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) clusters are planned across all 33 urban local bodies in the Yamuna catchment to bridge gaps in municipal solid waste processing.
Additionally, six biogas plants with a combined processing capacity of 1,250 tonnes per day have been proposed for the scientific disposal of dairy waste and to promote sustainable waste management.
The action plan also prioritises ecological restoration. A total of 61 isolated ponds and water bodies have been identified along the Yamuna corridor. Of these, 11 have already been restored, while the remaining are targeted for rejuvenation within a year through measures such as embankment construction, prevention of contaminated inflows and other restoration works.
Haryana currently has 86 operational STPs, 17 operational CETPs, a well-established biomedical waste treatment system, authorised hazardous waste disposal facilities and a robust e-waste recycling network.
The ongoing expansion of treatment and waste management infrastructure is expected to further strengthen the state’s pollution control capacity and support the long-term conservation of the Yamuna.
Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Local Bodies, Ashok Kumar Meena, Managing Director of the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, Sushil Sarwan, and other senior officers were present at the meeting. PTI SUN NB NB
